Internships.

Gain experience in sea turtle conservation and learn valuable field skills before embarking on a career in conservation.

Our internship programs give aspiring conservationists and field researchers the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in sea turtle conservation in a tropical environment with our fully trained field team. The high number of sea turtles that come to nest on our beaches over the course of the season gives interns a great opportunity to work with many females of different species during their placement.

Placements start from 6 weeks in length, and will take you through all the elements needed in order to build your knowledge on sea turtles, their nesting habitats, applied conservation, scientific data collection and management. Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in the following areas:

  • Taking biometric measurements on nesting females

  • Conducting night patrols and morning census using established protocols

  • Monitoring techniques and use of equipment

  • Sea turtle tagging

  • Nest excavations

  • Sea turtle hatchery management

  • Database management

  • Education and outreach

By the end of the internship, interns should be confident to lead patrols and collect data independently, and have a good understanding of sea turtle nesting behavior and conservation practices on our beaches. If interns are undertaking the placement as part of university practicals, they will also be supported in carrying out a short-term study in a certain research area under the supervision of a member of our field team if desired.

Internships cost $250 per week which covers food and lodging, as well as their training during their stay. Interns must cover their transportation costs to reach and leave COPROT, and any extra activity that they want to do during their free time.

It helps if interns to have previous experience with conservation, research, or science, however it is definitely not a requirement. All interns will need to pass through an interview process before being accepted.
