Rio Oro Base Camp.

In the middle of 2019, we were given the opportunity to develop our first research station in the Rio Oro Reserve, a large property practicing regenerative agriculture and reforestation close to the Rio Oro Refuge. The base camp is located just a few hundred meters from the entrance to Playa Rio Oro, one of the wildest and most pristine beaches on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We have built our camp with nature in mind, and have used primarily sustainable and natural resources, even upcycling some of the wood and other materials from old buildings no longer in use.

The two-story traditional style rancho provides an airy mixed dormitory where our staff and volunteers can sleep in the middle of nature, as well as being right in front of the area of beach with the highest sea turtle nesting activity in the region. We also have a large open kitchen and communal area, where food can be prepared while watching the birds fly by.

In order to promote sustainable development, we are also in the process of creating a small-scale permaculture project on the new property, where we are able to grow and produce a considerable amount of our own food for our staff and volunteers. This will reduce our reliance on purchasing food from unsustainable sources, as well as allow us to support local people in food production. One of our long-term goals is to become a completely zero waste facility!

At the Rio Oro Base Camp we offer longer term volunteering opportunities and internships, starting from 3 weeks.
